Surviving a Shounen Manga – Episode 60

Kill Her

The royal palace, which hadn’t had many quiet days lately, was lively once again.

“Do you think that’s a sensible thing to do?”

“We have to act!”

As if a surreal prophetic dream come true, the same scenes as at the last meeting were repeating once again.

Some people got angry, and others restrained them.

The same words came and went, like:

What cheek! How do we teach them a lesson?

However, there was one difference. The target. A cheeky human had to be taught a lesson this time too, but the subject was different.

“To throw something like that at us!”

“Thankfully there were no casualties! If it didn’t pass over us…”

“That squat-jawed bastard! We absolutely can’t let him off.”

Some of the more quick-tempered people came forward to demand his punishment.

All of them were from the ‘warhawk faction’.

And,

“Still, it’s a bit difficult to forcefully bring in and punish somebody who’s already entered the Warrior’s Path, and even passed the preliminary round.”

“Besides, nothing big happened at the proving grounds. If we’re supposed to ignore all past sins of the participants, how can we take issue with something so trivial? Sounds like overkill to me.”

Those who dissuaded them, coincidentally, were all from the ‘coalitionist faction’.

In general, the more radical ‘warhawk faction’ people were used to making a bit more noise, but the the ‘coalitionist faction’ were being particularly strident in their opposition today. This was probably because, unlike the previous case of ‘Princess Thermis’, public opinion about Squatjaw wasn’t that bad. He was now a famous name on the streets, in fact.

And the fact that Minister Tamar, the nominal head of the ‘warhawk faction’, wasn’t speaking up much, also contributed to this situation. Seeing such an unusual appearance from their leader, even members of his own faction had doubts in their hearts.

“Why so anxious? He just picked up and threw a rock, did he cause any trouble? Or are you so afraid that you now want to go arrest the man who’s the hottest topic in the capital? Really, you… tsk tsk.”

“Trouble?! If he’d caused a bit more trouble, the entire arena would’ve been destroyed! And who’s afraid! I’m taking about arresting a blasphemer, not because I’m afraid of him or anything!”

All of them were now retired from active duty, but they’d all walked the Warrior’s Path in the past. The boiling atmosphere didn’t show any signs of calming down easily.

Just then,

“It’s true that the Warrior’s Path is a sacred ritual of our Skull Empire, but that doesn’t make it a sanctuary for sinners. If you’ve done something wrong, shouldn’t you be punished for it?”

Someone quietly spoke up.

Surprisingly, it was Royal Teacher Bataar, a member of the ‘coalitionist faction’.

At his remarks that didn’t seem to fit his political leanings, everyone else shut up and started paying attention.

“Of course, this old man doesn’t think he’s done anything particularly wrong… but if there are people who still think his intentions are impure, it’s not out of the question to summon him here for an interrogation.”

“Huh…”

“But…”

While the murmurs were about to intensify little by little –

Bataar spoke again.

“Hear me out just a little longer, please. You all must be well aware that this old man had gone to pursue Princess Thermis at the first prince’s request. Not only to the Mainin Kingdom, but even to Westland. Although I had to come back empty-handed in the end… Anyway, on the ship returning to Eastland, I’d seen him. That Squatjaw. Prince Nergui and Minister Tamar were also on the ship.”

At that, everyone quietly nodded their heads.

It was a well-known fact.

“Of course, you know the overall shape of things, but not the exact details of what’d actually happened on the ship. I’ll tell you an anecdote. That Squatjaw, he once had a fight with an S-class adventurer while on board the ship.”

Then,

“Whoo, an S-class adventurer?”

“What’s their name?”

“Are they active in Eastland?”

Some people expressed their curiosity.

High-ranking adventurers were subjects of curiosity wherever they went, so this was no surprise.

“This old man doesn’t know. I think there are probably other people here who know more about him, but…”

The eyes of everyone present turned towards him. Because Bataar, who’d stopped speaking, glanced at him.

Yet Nergui only smiled back indifferently and stayed quiet.

Then someone ran out of patience and asked.

“What was the result?”

“It was one-sided. No, even calling it one-sided is inappropriate. It was… overwhelming. That Squatjaw was able to subdue an S-class adventurer with just one finger.”

The reaction to this news was the same for both factions.

They all gulped, silently.

“Anyway, the gist of what I’m trying to say is this. If one makes a mistake, they have to pay for it. However, those of you who wish to summon and interrogate him and issue a reasonable punishment, will have to prepare properly. It won’t be child’s play.”

As the silence that settled in the hall grew longer,

“Excuse me, I’ll be going first.”

Nergui stood up.

He’d come out to see if there was any possibility to move the army, but it was clearly a waste of time.

Besides, Squatjaw’s target was none other than himself. Just before he’d thrown the rock, their eyes had met. Those eyes, reminiscent of a wild beast.

To be honest, to say he wasn’t nervous would be a lie. What kind of a man could directly throw that elephant-sized rock at somebody else in front of such a large audience? It was at a level where you’d have to wonder if he was even human.

Still, it’d been a bit funny. To see both the factions struck dumb.

‘… They’re making such a fuss over nothing.’

As he left the conference room and walking towards his bedroom –

He saw a servant come scurrying in haste.

“What is it?”

“Some people have come to see you.”

The man looked somehow frightened.

The report, too, was vague. It was basic to report the visitor’s identity and purpose of coming.

“What’s it about?”

“I don’t know, sir. I’m very sorry!”

“Are you apologizing? It’s just the limit of your ability. Where are they?”

“I asked them to wait in the garden. That’s the only place I could keep them where there’d be few people…”

“Let’s go.”

Nergui headed straight for the garden.

Very quickly,

“There, there they are.”

He was able to meet the visitors.

There were two. A very fat man, and a very thin one.

When they saw Nergui, they bowed their heads, and slowly approached.

“Who are you?”

“Would you like to clear away the surroundings first?”

Despite being wary, Nergui complied.

If they’d had any intention of harming him, they would’ve attacked already.

“… Fine.”

As soon as the servant left at Nergui’s command, the thin man spoke up.

“Ash-Devouring Serpent.”

A momentary gleam flashed in Nergui’s eyes.

Ash-Devouring Serpent.

Among the assassin groups he’d entrusted with the quest, it belonged to the highest level.

And it was the only one that’d returned the quest completion reward.

A strange smile appeared on Nergui’s lips.

“Ash-Devouring Serpent… what’s that? Are you two old-timers then snakes, not people?”

“We’re an assassination squad. I don’t like wasting time, so I won’t go into details. Both you and I know that you’re our client, Fourth Prince. We investigate the client quite carefully before accepting a mission.”

“Oh, is that so?”

“It’s a little against the rules, but I came here because I have something to ask.”

Well, it didn’t seem like bluffing would work.

“Yeah, well. Actually, I also wanted to meet you guys at least once. The only ones conscientious enough to return the money… is that what passes for integrity for your type?”

“It doesn’t matter what you think.”

“Hmm, but why are you here?”

“There is something I wanted to ask. Because it might be quite disruptive to our work.”

“What?”

“Have you hired any other assassins?”

“… Other assassins?”

Nergui was a little perplexed by the question.

He had no idea about the details, but from the context, he could guess that another assassin group had gotten involved, one that could pose a problem even for these high-level assassins.

“If there are people aiming at the same target, we need to know. It might cause confusion otherwise.”

“… The only assassins that I’ve currently hired are you. Assuming, of course, that the quest will continue. Although, my personal retinues are moving too, though they’re not assassins. Are you sure you don’t need their information?”

Naturally, he wasn’t lying. But the thin man didn’t change his expression. He just shook his head lightly as if that was inconsequential.

“… Is that so?”

“What is it?”

“I’ve seen some familiar faces.”

“Who?”

“Have you ever heard of a group called the ‘Tamers’?”

It was an unfamiliar name.

“Never.”

“Looks like you really don’t know.”

The slender man then added a brief description of the ‘Tamers’.

They were a new force who’d appeared in Eastland only about two or three years ago. All information about them, including the actual name of the organization, the number of members, and the location of their headquarters, was hidden behind a layer of fog. They were called the ‘Tamers’ because all the members of the organization practiced taming ‘divine beasts’.

“Divine beasts? You mean… the legendary…?”

“Yes. They don’t seem to be as powerful as the legends say, but they certainly do have a special feel to them. In the end, we can’t know for sure.”

“… Divine beasts, huh.”

The thin man also added that although it was not an organization that specialized in assassinations, they did similar things from time to time, so the two organizations had encountered each other occasionally on the field.

“Are they here, now?”

“Yes. I still haven’t figured out their purpose. So, I came to ask if you’d hired them, sir prince.”

“No, not at all.”

The slender man nodded at Nergui’s answer.

“Alright. Then we will proceed.”

“Are there any other distractions? For example, what about my personal servants?”

The thin man shook his head indifferently.

“It’s fine.”

“… Is that so?”

Nergui grinned and muttered.

To think that this cheeky rake-thin man didn’t show the slightest hesitation…

‘He failed, but he’s still so cocky, completely disregarding the guy he’s chasing after.’

Then, as Nergui was about to turn around, the thin man spoke up again as if he’d suddenly remembered something.

“By the way, can we proceed with the quest as it is?”

“…?”

Nergui thought about the intent behind the question for a moment, then nodded.

“Yeah.”

The reason for reconfirming this was naturally clear.

Everybody knew. Killing the princess would no longer benefit the ‘war’. It’d only get in the way. To wage war, the princess had to give up on the test first.

But,

“Sure. The order stays the same.”

Nergui didn’t care.

War had never been his true purpose from the beginning.

“Kill her.”

A vacant lot near the hotel.

“Whoo…”

I took a deep, long breath.

I was getting a little nervous as I waited.

Because what was coming next was so high on the difficulty scale that the ‘rock-lifting’ earlier might as well be playing with dolls in comparison.

I quickly started stretching.

Of course, my current body wasn’t weak enough to be riddled with pain if I suddenly put it under a workout. Still, according to the modern real-life perspective, which was still buried deep inside my head, stretching before strenuous exercise was essential.

“Whoof, whoof…”

While I was stretching my arms and legs like that –

“… So you’re here.”

A hoarse voice came from afar.

The voice I’d been waiting for.

When I turned around, the red-eyed princess was glaring at me with a vicious expression.

“So you came, ghost gramps.”

“You son of a bitch! What a big mess you’ve made! Throwing a rock at the nobles! Ha ha ha ha!”

“Oh, that… it was nothing much.”

“So you want to throw one at me next, huh? Do you still remember, that I am the Bayar Khan?!”

“Yeah, yeah, so you’ve said.”

“Ka ha ha ha! This cheeky bastard!”

I glanced at him as he walked closer.

Hmmm.

There were three main reasons why I’d dared summon this talkative and ferocious ghost.

First, because I couldn’t waste even a single moment of this precious leading point of view.

The Warrior’s Path was taking two days off after the preliminary round, then another day off after the first and second rounds, and then would come the finals.

In other words, there was a day off now that the preliminaries were over. So instead of wasting my time, I needed to do something interesting.

So the confrontation with this ghost grandpa could be quite a worthwhile content. With his unique looks, distinctive personality, and above all, strong power.

I might even be able to raise the author’s favourability a little bit by introducing him. He must’ve been a carefully set character, but he couldn’t even appear in the original.

If the author had any conscience, he should at least say thank you.

Second, because I’d made a promise a while ago. To have a bout.

And I was frankly curious. The aura I could feel right now was also amazing, but from what I’d heard here and there, the achievements of that ghost called Bayar Khan had been quite impressive in life.

Like expanding the empire’s territory five times compared to before, destroying over a hundred kingdoms, and almost building the first unified empire in Eastland… that made you think of Genghis Khan.

And what caught my attention above all was the anecdotes about his incredible ‘power’.

Like winning a tug of war against a thousand people, or carrying back two giant elephants on his shoulders after going out hunting, to even ‘throwing’ the materials for a raft from the mainland to an uninhabited isolated island, to help people who’d been stranded there… his record was chock full of such absurd things.

It made me feel like I should try him out once.

Third and last, because I had some things to work on.

Actually, before this Warrior’s Path, I’d gotten some background shopping done.

This was partially to prepare for possible attacks and to pass the hurdles easily, but above all, it was to look ‘cool’ while fighting.

Of course, they weren’t that great. I couldn’t learn any new unique abilities in the first place.

To give some examples, [Three Weapons Expert], [Martial Artist Who Barely Learned This and That], [Street Fighter with More Wins than Losses], and [Woodcutter Who’s Learned to Sharpen His Axe].

I knew that these backgrounds contained hidden traits such as ‘weapon skills’ and ‘combat sense’, but I didn’t know how they actually worked.

So, I needed to test them out before the finals.

Of course, using that ferocious ghost as a test piece… would’ve been impossible for anybody else.

Therefore,

“Ka ha ha ha! Now it’s too late to cry and pray. Don’t get upset, you cocky Squatjaw.”

“Yeah, yeah, so we doing this or not?”

I faced the princess who radiated a vicious force.

‘Haah…’

I’d felt it once before, but it was still some tremendous momentum.

That aura was reminiscent of a huge mountain.

Within it a fighting spirit burnt like fire, and those red eyes blazed with ferocious bloodlust.

The strength that naturally and effortlessly radiated from the princess’ form, made even me tremble.

But, of course –

“Come if you’re ready, old geezer.”

There was no thought of defeat in my head.

When a character other than the protagonist takes the lead role of a chapter, he has only one absolute duty.

To support the story on his back.

Because carrying the chapter is his significance.

Even if it was just a practice match, I could never lose. There’d be no second chance once I disappointed the readers.

‘Haah… shall we do it?’

While I was so firmly determined,

“Ka ha ha ha! You’re still one arrogant bastard. Alright then… let’s go, little Squatjaw!”

Bayar Khan, in the form of the princess, flew towards me.

  1. Thanks for the chapter~!

Squatjaw carrying the series on his back

I like squatjaw’s portrayal in the novel cover rather than the manhwa though, Big jaw with manly beard is better
but then the manhwa slaps with the comical manga-style comedy, more comedy oriented than my imagination
Also for some reason I imagine Cocoa as a loli, don’t know where that description came from but its stuck in my mind rather than the manhwa version

And I just shared it here for no reason…

  2. You know, originally I was thinking that the author really would drop one of the Seven kings on Squatjaw, but then I realized that it’s actually going to be Perfect Karl Zahard that the author tries to kill Squatjaw with.

I mean think about it, if Squatjaw was defeated by one of the Seven Kings it would basically cripple Karl’s narrative development, because as much as the author says characters need to find their own way he pretty much handholds his favorites down interesting paths he created specially for them. Because if Sqautjaw dies via human force of nature it will give no proper comparison to Karl leaving the readers constantly wondering who would win if Sqautjaw was still alive. And it’s just not in his character to swear to defeat the person who beat Squatjaw and that’s without even considering the fact that due to his weakness Karl was never able to defeat any of the Seven Kings, with any bullshit that could be pulled out to secure a win would cause the readers to question how Sqautjaw, the guy who had an entire chapter of him performing asspull after asspull couldn’t have done something similar to at least escape.

Meaning, the only option for Karl Zahard to regain his standing would be to defeat Squatjaw himself. But while Karl is constantly getting stronger, the gap has grown smaller since their last encounter with Squatjaw gaining tremendous power from winning the popularity contest which brings not only tremendous physical might but also significantly expanded options like captain ghosts due to him being able to copy better abilities. Now, even though the author will find some way to bullshit Karl into being able to defeat a captain ghost, the effort of doing so would give many openings to hit his weak point, so unless the author buffs Karl to such an insane degree that he destroys the power scaling he will be unable to avoid getting hit in his weak point, leading to another defeat.

Now to show my point of how devastating the impact of Karl being able to defeat Squatjaw would be on the power creep, scaling, and plot in general I will do some very loose math.

Now lets be very generous and assume that at the time of the adventurer exam Karl was 2.0 times as strong as post-poll Squatjaw and that by the time Squatjaw returned he would normally be around 3.0 post-poll Squatjaws, that’s an entire Squatjaw of improvement.
Now let’s be extremely stingy and assume that Squatjaw got very little on his escapade, gaining minimal backgrounds and not attaining his second unique ability or any complementary special ability, putting him around… let’s say 1.2 post-poll Squatjaws.
Now is where things start getting crazy, as of now, Sqautjaws best ability is ghost dance, this is because it allows him to summon a captain ghost which has 5.0 times the might of the summoner which clocks out at 6.0 post-poll Squatjaws, twice the power Karl would normally be at. But let’s assume that the author uses the nebulous nature of Karl’s maximum power at the time of the first fight with Squatjaw to put him somewhere in the range of 6.0-7.0 post-poll Squatjaws allowing him to defeat the captain ghost, this is of course assuming the author will handwave away Karl’s inability to hit the ghosts, But Karl would still lose as he would not be able to handle the combined pressure of everyone else.
So here we reach the depths of utter mania, let’s be generous once more and assume that it takes 1.5 times someone’s power to make them a non-issue, in that case it would require the author to boost Karl to a minimum of 9.0 post poll Squatjaws, this is way too high, the readers would notice how busted Karl’s growth speed is and the author wouldn’t be able to rationalize it without nerfing unstoppable growth, which I doubt he’d ever do, or revealing too much, locking Karl at having grown 7.0 Squatjaws in the time it took Squatjaw to return which is a maximum of three months.
Now for the final calculations, lets assume that Leo’s adventure canonically took around two years, cutting off the three that already passed that’s 21 months or 7 sets of 3, and remember that unstoppable growth increases the rate at which it increases meaning it would increase the amount of post-poll Squatjaws obtained per 3 month period. That leads to a grand total 51.0 post-poll Squatjaws if the rate stayed linear to 100.0+ post-poll Squatjaws with the rate increasing, this would turn Karl into an unstoppable force that not even all the characters combined could defeat and remember that Karl is only the author’s second favorite, he like Leo the best, meaning in order to defeat one Squatjaw he would have to ruin Leo’s chance at becoming the strongest, which is something he would not do.

So if he couldn’t defeat Squatjaw solely by fudging the numbers of unstoppable growth then how would Karl be able to win? The answer is simple, if he couldn’t defeat them because of his weakness, then get rid of the weakness. That’s right, I believe that the author is going to remove Karl Zahard’s only weakness as it would allow him to win even with unstoppable growth boosted to a lower level than would be needed otherwise.

    Is it it petty? yes

Will the author get called out on it? yes

Am I excited to see how Hiro Squatjaw wins anyways? YES

    1. Interesting theory. The author isn’t meekly going to let Squatjaw do whatever he wants to do, that’s true enough. And that’s all I’m saying for the moment.

… Man, this is pretty much a thesis at 1k words. Just seeing somebody take so much of their time to think through the plot and its implications… good shit, mate.

      1. Oh you want a thesis, you want a thesis, I Haven’t Even Gotten Started!
I’ve thought about this series wayyyy more than what I’ve shown so far, this is nothing, I came up with about half of this on the spot!
Squatjaw’s 2nd and 3rd Unique abilities, the evolutions of his 1st unique ability, how all three would work together, even the true nature of the author himself, I’ve already thought of it all!

I’ve already touched upon Perfect Form Squatjaw, but I’ve got more for later!

I don’t know if he will get any special abilities yet, but I hope so!

And not to mention the whole rant I’ve got in store about the hypocritical bullshit the author pulls!

I’ve even got ideas for fanfictions about this series, don’t test my ability to overthink!

I do this over all the things I like, it keeps me happy, this is a great series and even if some of my theories turn out to be not true I hope to continue enjoying it in the future, and while the updates can be slow at times the quality top-class and it makes this story even easier to enjoy.

    2. I dont think author would remove the weakness. I mean right now he could without that many issues as the fight Squatjaw had with Karl was offscreen. But even hed realize thats screwing the plot and powerscaling and also removes the reason why Squatjaw could win in the first place. And readers would def call him out on his shit as you mentioned and like they did in the original story for Karl’s bs heck itd be even moreso since he doesnt have weakness excuse and hes using Karl against the fan favorite character.

To begin with he had Karl with that setting because he knew a character like Karl is too absurd so he had to give him a weakness otherwise hed reach even above the Seven Kings in time. At worst id say hed make it less debilitating so maybe need more than one hit to the Achille’s heel? Now assuming author does not remove or reduce Karl’s weakness then theres two methods he can use to let Karl win.

      1. Weaken Squatjaw. Obviously he will not directly weaken Squatjaw but a big part of his strength depends on popularity so he can try and reduce Squatjaw’s popularity. In fact author seems to already be trying this (its not working very well).

      2. Give up on Karl’s setting as a ‘one man adventurer team’ and get him a powerful crew as well that can help cover for his weakness. The reason Karl went down just like that first round was largely cus it was one vs many afterall. Being a loner in this setting is also kind of a weakness in itself its just that author wanted to do it to make him cool and he had sufficient strength originally but now it might be worth it to do away with that.

      1. Also if he did no.2 he’d actually be giving Karl character development and making him more acceptable so once again Squatjaw helps author improve on his failings and Karl as a character just like he did the first time by defeating Karl and thus preventing reader outrage (as well as actually giving solid evidence for ‘he always had the Achille’s heel weakness really’ that nobody believed in the first run)

      2. I never meant immediately, things need to make at least some narrative sense after all.

You know how saiyans like Goku are born with super sensitive tails that if you grab basically negates their ability to do anything, but then Goku took a three year training ark in which he trained his tail so that it was no longer a weakness.

Well I was talking about the author sending Karl on one those training arc, not as long obviously, but a training arc to get rid of his weakness.

The author is probably going to send Leo on a training arc too, because remember I was heavily lowballing how much stronger Squatjaw is going to get on this trip. So of course after Squatjaw pulls up with a SECOND (and most likely highly compatible) unique ability along with who knows what else, Leo is going to need a massive amount of bullshit powered training to keep up because not even the author can awaken whatever hidden gear 5 of destiny that kid has yet without getting flamed so hard he’ll have to make a full Squatjaw spin-off just to keep the mob at bay.

        Liked by 2 people

        1. Leo isnt really a concern since iirc Squatjaw himself said hes proper shounen bs and just powers up as he goes and if he fights strong opponent he will generally scale up to be able to win even if not easily. Also by narrative law a rival cannot outclass the protagonist completely so Leo’s growth will keep up and wouldnt be considered particularly absurd as he’s the protagonist unlike Karl.

Also if you think about it from the perspective of the readers isnt Squatjaw the one with the most absurd growth of all? He was originally just a slightly interesting mob and look where he is now. Sure you can use the excuse of ‘he just didnt show his strength back then’ but that only goes so far. But Squatjaw gets a pass by readers cus hes likable enough just as Leo gets a pass cus hes the protagonist. In this sort of setting many things can be passed over by so long as the readers like it (also Rule of Cool and Rule of Funny are big things). Ie. Squatjaw in the amusement park chapters also used this on purpose by making it a gag bit so readers can accept the protagonist crew losing to him. Later on he was well liked enough everyone was cheering even as he got 1st place to Leo crew’s 3rd.

Narratively Karl’s greatest flaw isnt him being a ‘one man adventurer’ team when no one else is or even being too powerful and having OP Unique Ability (Squatjaw’s is even more OP esp in long run really). Its the fact he isnt liked enough to get a pass despite his absurdity. Author seems to also be somewhat aware of this since he gave Karl a few chaps to develop him even if thats mostly his favoritism.

The other problem is role. He doesnt seem to have a proper role for the story. Squatjaw also had this issue at first and I think he even mentioned it but got himself the role of rival so he’s fine. Now we dont have all that much information on Karl in the original run aside from causing reader outrage but I dont think he had a proper role in the story.

Rival? We know Leo didnt have one in the og.
Villain? He’s an author favorite I very much doubt he’d just be a typical villain to be defeated.
Goal to reach kinda like Seven Kings or becoming the Adventurer King? He’s powerful but hes not quite up there. Maybe can somewhat still count as a closer goal.
          Friend/Ally? Haha dont think so.

In conclusion he probs had no solid role and was just this annoying OP guy whos shoved in cus author favoritism. Naturally this gets him no favors with the readers. And a training arc for him wouldnt solve the underlying issues if anything itd make things worse as the author favoritism towards Karl becomes obvious (to in story readers not us haha). Imagine neither being the rival char nor the protag nor the main villain and just doing a training arc to get rid of your only weakness. Thats still a blatant asspull.

He’d have to either make Squatjaw less popular or improve Karl’s popularity to a similarish level to Squatjaw’s in regards to at least reduce the outcry from the readers. Of course he could just do it anyway ignoring any backlash but while he might do this if he feels he has to its still very much not preferable even for him from what we can tell. Its the same reason why even when he tries to make things difficult for Squatjaw hes still careful/subtle about it. He shouldnt do something so overt unless Squatjaw pisses him off far more than has so far (which to be entirely fair is plently likely) or I’m greatly underestimating his favoritism towards Karl, we’ll see in time I guess. Alright I’m done.

          1. I feel like you’re greatly misunderstanding something, everything you said would be how things would go if the author was a normal person who focused on making a quality story, but the author of this story is everything but normal, this is someone who when handed the coolest character introduction imaginable on a silver platter, got pissed off so badly that he attempted to eject Sqautjaw from the main plot with the express intent of killing him off when he gets back.

You don’t really get what’s going on, the author’s goal at this point is to kill Squatjaw, preferably with Karl so he can regain his overpowered position. The author actively wants Squatjaw dead as soon as possible, but he can’t just rocks fall everyone dies him else the readers will riot. So his objective is to use what narrative devices necessary to make Karl strong enough to kill the guy messing with his power fantasy, because that’s what this is about, the author wants this world to be a stupid power fantasy where his chosen ones get to face slap anyone they want with their auto-scaling divine blessing. But then Squatjaw ruined that, Karl was defeated by a team, what he was made to be better than, and now the author is out for blood.

And as for the point of the rival not being able to outclass the mc, Paul Shinji, proof that the mc doesn’t need to always be stronger than the rival, they just need to beat them at the end. Meaning Squatjaw has until they reach the tower of adventures to break the rules of reality itself.

And one more thing, do you really believe that the readers think Sqautjaw has improved at all? They’ve never seen him fight, even in this arc it will be obvious he’s holding back. Narratively, he holds the positions of both Bon Clay-Sama and Blackbeard, with a bit of shanks mixed in. Sure he’s funny, he’s the joke character, but he’s the special kind of joke character, the one that sits atop the power scale. But he also knows way more than he should, he attracts characters that seem to be counter’s for the entire hero’s party, with himself being a counter for anyone. You’re judgment on this subject is impaired because WE the readers of this story know his struggles, but the readers, they’ve never seen him so much as break a sweat. What do they think of him, perhaps to them Squatjaw is some sort of god.

Just something to think about, kay.

  3. Real talk every time the audience turns around Squatjaw and his crew are doing something nutty, from the crew’s abilities (turning the ground into a giant earthworm to ride on, turning into shadows), to the situations they get themselves into- finding a divine beast, entering a tournament to protect a princess and actively antagonizing royalty. If I was a reader of this Adventure King, I would understand the audience’s need to see Squatjaw as “it’s always interesting when he’s around”[Leo, forgot what chapter]. Comparatively, the audience has to follow the main character’s viewpoint, and his team’s abilities and activities are structured in a much less exciting way. There’s very little surprise factor, probably because in a meta sense, the author of this story cares very little about Leo and his team except as a benchmark for the person getting sucked into the manga, the self-insert.
This excitement gap between the two teams is widened by the fact that Squatjaw can see and prepare for when chapters start, in order to be even more outrageous, so with his knowledge of the series he always has something ready to bring to the table. Leo has no knowledge and is just wandering around hoping something fun (like Squatjaw) will come around.

    1. Sorry, but I have to disagree, the author very much cares about his main characters, he cares about them too much in fact. According to what we know from Squatjaw’s assorted remarks Leo along with most of the others never stop growing. Whether it’s a pure boost in power from whatever’s convenient to unlocking a new hidden trait, they appear to grow significantly stronger with each fight that isn’t just a face-slap for the author’s enjoyment. This is why Squatjaw doesn’t feel confident in facing Leo even with his higher physical power.
For example here’s what we know Leo has so far: auto-scaling, tremendous balanced physical abilities from chapter 1, highest natural luck in the world, and his unique ability Lighting That Destroys Calamities which itself grants: heavily boosted strength and speed, master level electrokinesis from chapter 1, and the negation of any and all attacks from people weaker than him (more on this later). And things he most likely has are: all traits boosting physique, several hidden traits on the level of unique abilities that make what he already does more effective (like Kiriko’s accuracy), additional locked hidden traits to act as get out of jail free cards in future fights, and as previously mentioned his gear 5 of destiny.
And to note, all those mentioned are what he has RIGHT NOW, as in these are the things Leo could bust out if needed right at this moment, this isn’t including any traits he may obtain through taking elixirs or undergoing training arcs such as poison immunity.
The kid is broken as all get out, while the author may have gotten down his style, he will keep adding stuff to Leo until the story ends.

And I just realized we forgot Kiriko, the dude that constantly picks up random skills like traditional Taoist techniques or just flat out attaining a unique ability rivaling special ability that turns him into a monster.

And they aren’t just walking around, they’re shoehorned into the plot by the adventurers’ association. The author creates interesting situations that will be beneficial for the main characters, then uses the adventurers’ association as a medium to get them to these situations.

The author won’t let his favorite characters stay stagnant precisely because their his favorites. Is this good for the overall story? Well it’s been hinted at several times that this series was carried by it’s art. Take that as you will.

Oh, you know how I said I’d get back to a certain characteristic of Leo’s unique ability, let’s do that now. I think that the nullification of lesser’s attacks is the worst possible thing you could give to the protagonist of a shounen manga, especially one based heavily off of One Piece. The whole purpose of the ability is to irrelevantize wave tactics and weak but skilled fighters making it so you have to be on at least the protagonist’s level just to be able to negatively effect him. THIS IS THE POWER OF A FUCKING VILLAIN, really, if Leo wanted to terrorize innocent villages, he could literally just keep his power on low to negate all attacks on him. This is even worse because as I said before, this story is based off One Piece, in which every main villain, other than Hodey Jones, was a corrupt person in power that was enforcing their power onto those weaker than them for their own sick kicks. Is this the kind of lesson you should be giving the kids who read this shit? Should the Lighting That Destroys Calamities let the user pull down the great evils instead of being “weak people don’t have rights” in ability form?
